RENEWABLE COSTS CLOSING IN ON NATURAL GAS
Gas is still king, but renewables are catching up. At present gas prices, combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) are the cheapest technology for new power generation around much of the globe. But onshore wind is already cheaper under favorable wind conditions and, as costs fall further, it is set to displace gas everywhere including the US by 2030. And solar photovoltaic (PV) is expected to displace gas soon after 2020 everywhere in Europe and before 2030 in the US. Less than a decade later, PV will be able to even beat fully depreciated fossil fuel plants. Those are key predictions from Energy Intelligence’s new Energy Cost Report on electricity generation costs — based on levelized costs of energy (LCOE) calculations — which incorporates updated 2018 data and an overview of historical and projected trends over 2000-50 in the US and Europe.
